Where is Sunset Park?
![]() |
In the Kendall area of Southwest Dade County, Florida. You will find us on SW 103rd Avenue from North Kendall Dr. (SW 88th Street) North to SW 80th Street on a branch of the Snapper Creek canal. Our complex of 156 units includes a middle park with dual tennis courts and pools to the north and south. Our landscaping boasts a combination of royal poinciana trees and cabbage palms. |
The Royal Ponciana, a native of Madagascar, is also known as the "Flame Tree." It produces a wide canopy of delicate fernlike foilage that can reduce the ambient air tempture by 6 to 8 degrees on a hot summer day. In mid summer it's abundance of flame red blossoms is an awesome display of beauty frequently obscuring the exquisite beauty of the orchid like individual flowers. The original plantings were done by home owner volunteers circa 1975 and are continuously being supplemented from seedlings grown by the association. Thier population has recovered nicely since hurrucane Andrew, 1992.

The native Cabbage Palm or Palmetto grows to about 50 feet tall with a long straight trunk and a crown of palmate, (pinnate are the feather shaped ones), fronds up to five feet in length. The cooked buds of this tree taste somewhat like cabbage and are also known as the delicasy "heart of palm." The majority of these trees were planted by the developer circa 1970. |
